Last week I had booked a shoot with Bijuju Accessories boutique formally named Vanity. With the new name change comes a new web site layout and image. I shot these photos for the web and for some advertising. We shot in Bijuju owners Abe and Joujou Safas home. My wife again was the model and by the end of the day had the house destroyed from moving furniture to place lights and reflectors. Here are a few images that we came up with. •December 2, 2009 • 1 CommentThis week I was pitched, last minute, the opportunity to shoot some photos to go in a new web layout for a local womans accessories store. I was given a time frame of about 3 hours. So I rounded up my wife and shot a photo in our living room in front of your tree. I shot long to really compress the background and the photo is lit with two strobes on large umbrellas and a reflector in her lap.
The other location we shot at was in a parking garage at Market Commons in Myrtle Beach one location in the garage was a vine covered fence that had strong sun light coming through it. Again same concept, long lense to compress the background, this time with one strobe on a large umbrella and the reflector blocking the sunlight on her opposite side and adding a little fill lighting on that side as well.

Allie and tre’ Capp wedding
•October 1, 2009 • Leave a CommentHere are a few photos from Allie and Tre’ Capp’s wedding on Sat. The day started out looking gloomy and then the drizzle started but about an hour before the wedding the rain stopped, the ground dried and the humidity actually dropped a little making a great atmosphere for an outdoor wedding. It was still a little overcast but that worked out better for me. You can check out more of the images at www.flickr.com/photos/bobbyaltman/sets/
Bridal Session
•August 23, 2009 • 2 Comments
Last nights bridal portrait session went well despite the rain, ticks, and missing out on Africa with my best friend Scott Smallin. We shot at Atalya castle in Huntington beach state park. A wedding was actually going on inside the castle so we shot around the outside and in the dunes. Photos were shot with two strobes one rim and one bounce out of an umbrella. The umbrella was on a stand held by an assistant above and infront of the bride and an assistant with a reflector trying to give just a little fill on the right. Dragging the shutter to burn in the sun set. You can view other wedding and engagement photos on my flickr page at www.flickr.com/bobbyaltman
Recent summer work
•August 10, 2009 • 1 CommentIts been a little while since I have updated this so I figured I would put a couple things on this post both summer related but complete opposite in types of work.
First this is this Mojito for a summer mix drink article that is in this issue of GS Magazine. shot with two lights on a glass table on the patio at noon. Shot on the glass to get the reflection with the main light bouncing off an umbrella to camera right and rim light in yard to the left cross lighting the drink. An assistant held a white skrim over the drint to try and soften and block some of the noon sun.
The second image is of a jet ski racer named Jim Chester for Western Power Sports. This image was a bit more difficult. With life jackets to keep me and an assistant from drowning we floated nearly a half mile down the intracoastal waterway, with my camera in an underwater housing and a strobe in a ziplock bag. I under exposed the background/sky by one stop and had my assistant hand hold a strobe up high. Panning with Jim helped keep him sharp while adding a little motion to the background. strobe was on 1/2 power in manual with the camera at f/5.6 250th of a sec. at 400ISO. Trouble with this was keeping the assistant in a good position as Jim circled us for the turn. View more sports and other photos at my flickr page at www.flickr.com/bobbyaltman

Today while working in the yard I found this little guy and decided to shoot some photos. Going back to my animal photography post talking about shooting on the animals eye level. This was shot with two strobes and as close as I could get with my Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro at f/2.8 to get as shallow a depth as possible to try and elimenate any grass blades and make the toads eye stand out. Focus on the eyes is a must especially at this close range.
This week in people…photography

Let me just start out by saying that these two photos will never win any awards, however, they help to illustrate the versatility in style a photographer must have to work with different publications. The first image shot for GS Magazine was a head shot for a dining review. The personality of the woman the photo is of helped to dictate how I would shoot this photo… (also taking into account the more conservative demographic of the magazine).I Lit This photo with only one large soft box close to the table to help wrap the light around her. It was actually an ugly day outside so instead of dropping in the background I decided to blow it out to give the illusion that it was kind of sunny and to help add to the softness of the photo. I did this by putting the camera on a tripod and dragging out the shutter to about 1/6th of a second. I also shot the photo with a long lens to compress the background and in turn soften the depth even though I used an aperture of around f/8.
This next image was a bartender spotlight used in the Weekly Surge. This photo was done with two strobes one to rim light him (Jason King) at camera right and far in the corner and another strobe at camera left cross lighting him both were bare bulb to crate hard shadows. I also used a wide lens (canon 20mm f/2.8) and shot real close and low then I drug out the shutter again to burn in the ambient light from the signs on the wall behind him. This helps place him and also he is not surrounded by all black. The combination of hard lights and wide low angle helps make this image a little more edgy for the younger demographic of this publication.

On a shoot recently with local photographer Kip Beech, shooting a dancer for Legends in Concert. He decided to let me shoot a few frames and this is what I came back with. The dance photo was shot with two speedlights cross lighting her. One on an umbrella and one bare bulb shot at f/5.6, ISO 100, and at 1/100th of a sec to burn in the color in the sky. The trailer photo was shot with three lights. Two on umbrellas cross lighting her and one bare bulb rim light behind the trailer at her back. This image was shot a f/2.8, ISO 400, and (hand held) at 1/10th of a sec to burn in what little color the sky still had at 7:45 pm.
